Nice character building exercise in LCC today. Strong winds on ridgetops at upper elevations. Rain up to 9,000 feet, then rain and sleet as high as 10,100 feet. Dug quick pits at 8,500 feet and 10,000 feet; N/NE aspects. Lingering weakness is still present with buried surface hoar and near surface facets from the 1/8/2011 stability massacre. Weak layer is 2 to 4 inches deep and identifiable with shovel tap tests. Wind, water, and a big ol' weak layer; things are going to get wild here soon. Rollerballs widespread at lower elevations and wet avalanche releases were visible on almost all lower elevation steep slopes while driving out of the canyon. Conditions just flat out sucked and are trending towards a big scary suck tomorrow when things are loaded up more from the storm. I'd recommend a rest day tomorrow if you're in slc.
