Snowmass to Buttermilk Traverse | UNITED STATES, COLORADO | 01/09/2008, by gripnrip

Heading out to the Ridge
We've been getting hammered with snow here in Colorado, and the avy danger has been High for a couple days now. I've been jonesing to get into the backcountry, but most of the stuff is just too dangerous. We did manage a fun tour today that had minimal danger, from Snowmass to Buttermilk. We were scoping the route, as we'll be guiding it for Aspen Alpine Guides, as a sort of an Intro-to-the-Backcountry type outing. While it only has a few short shots that offer any turns, it was great just to be outside, enjoying all the fresh snow. Nothing like tromping around in the woods for a couple of hours on a cold, snowy day.
Dropping in for some turns.
Dropping in for some turns.
We tried to get one steep slope to slide, as Mike was belayed out on to it and jumped up and down. Nothing went, which was a bummer as I had the video rolling, hoping for some prime footage for YouTube. Maybe next time. We did have the snow settle under us a couple of times, as the snowpack is still adjusting to all the recent loading. Hopefully it will be more settled by the weekend and we can get up into Marble to take a look around.
