US Ski Mountaineering Championships
The morning of Saturday March 21st brought together dozens of lycra-clad skinny skiers in bright green boots for the annual US Ski Mountaineering National Championships in Jackson Hole, WY. Dozens of the country's best rando-racers gathered at the starting line and began the approximately 6000 vertical foot race consisting of skinning, bootpacking, and skiing. The final bootpack ascended the infamous Corbet's Couloir, with a ladder on the final 20 feet over the cornice. 65 competitors were divided into three different categories for both men and women: Race, Heavy Metal, and Rec.


Congratulations to Pete Swenson and Monique Merrill for becoming this year's national champions. The top two men and women from the race category will be selected for the US World Cup team. View full race results here.

I think it would be way cooler if they had to crampon and axe up the corbetts, more of a mountaineering race of sorts.

I agree!
If they could somehow create a wall of stable ice that would be really cool.

This kind of Mountaineering National Championship is a definitely challenging experience. I think it was a loot of fun to be in there :)
