Wildlife, Good Snow and a Broken Binding | Grand Teton National Park Backcountry, WY United States | 02/06/08, by powderjunky
We had our first sunny day in as long as I can remember on Feb. 5, so we headed out to Grand Teton National Park in search of great views and great skiing.
Nice snow and a nice view of the hole.
There were still some clouds lingering around the peaks but they slowly disappeared as the day rolled on. Skinning in the sun kept us warm and cozy despite the cold temps.

We didn't see too many folks out and we were excited to have the place to ourselves. We rounded a corner and ran into a local who was more interested in the frozen vegetation than skiing.

Due to all the snow we have gotten we decided to ski a really mellow line, but still found some great snow with some great views of the valley.
Skiing never gets old.
We were having a blast and were about 300-500 vertical feet from the valley floor in elevation and then it happened. I went off a small air and some how managed to rip my left free ride binding right off!

I am not sure what I hit, I couldn't find anything, after I collected myself, that could have caused that kind of damage. The even weirder thing is that there is no new damage to the base either. The mounting is still firmly on the ski... I think it just defected??
where did the rest of it go?
Well hopefully Black Diamond will replace it. I will post an update on their customer service once I talk with them. Well thank God I was alright and that I had some duct tape in my pack!
No base damage, how did this happen?
We made a make-shift tele-binding and it worked to get me down to the flats and skate back to the main Taggart lake trail which was pretty well packed down so I was able to boot pack out pretty easily.

All in all it was a pretty fun trip and just gave me another reason to bring everything I might need in my pack. Without the duct tape, I probably would still be out there breaking trail to the car.
A great sunset made me forget all about my broken binding.
The snow pack is definitely sketchy ,especially when you get away from the Teton Pass Ski Resort. I hope everyone uses caution and prudence. We heard lots of reports of natural and skier caused slides this day.

There's a one year warranty on most BD stuff. Looks like that model might be past it...but they will probably help you. for a small fee.
