Always wanted to explore out here and do some skiing near John Day. We had our hopes of skiing off Strawberry Peak, the range's tallest mountain. We began to doubt ourselves as we skinned past lost of good steep north facing terrain, and our doubt became reality as we reached the summit, only to ind that the main faces off the summit have been wind stripped leaving us only with a pile of scree. I would be surprised if the true summit ever holds that much snow in mid winter. Anyway we got in some okay turns on a beautiful sunny day.

Overall we logged 16 miles but there is a lot of cool ski terrain right near the wilderness boundary of the southern entrance. the road getting to the trail head is still snow covered and we had to hike 3 miles from where you parked to the trailhead. But you could still use a snowmobile to get in there.

Definitely a cool spot worth coming to, just don't have high expectations of skiing of Strawberry Mountain.

Good effort. We need to keep uncovering these great areas.
