Backcountry Skiing Journal From:
Warpigsinfin: March 9, 2010 Uphill: 6,000 ft. | Downhill: 6,000 ft.
We went up to have a look at the conditions on the Grand Teton and to drop off a few ropes and other mixed climbing gear. We left the trailhead at 3 am in hopes of avoiding potential wet slides off the E and SE aspects.
Completely clear and cold enough overnight. Perfect skin track (booted the steep parts) to perfect step-kicking conditions above the Meadows until it became breakable crust at about 11,000 and we started to slog ankle to knee deep sugar under garbage crust.
Partly cloudy with light winds up high. Warm enough to kick off slides near cliffbands and offer perfect corn in the sun from 11,200 to the trailhead. From the top of the TeePee Glacier (about 12,000) we found breakable crust which wasn't exactly fun but not too dangerous.
Good corn down low but I wouldn't want to ski it on anything but a really sunny, moderately warm day. The Grand is starting to shape uo and I think we'll give it a go soon.Read more here: http://oilfreefun.com
