Backcountry Skiing Journal From:

Warpigsinfin: February 21, 2010 Uphill: 5,000 ft. | Downhill: 5,000 ft.

Yesterday we skied the Sliver in variable conditions. Good turns in the shade at all elevations encountered... powder dust on sun crust down low. Dangerous accumulations on the sun crust in windloaded pockets at higher elevations.

Bluebird and windless with high summit clouds developing in the afternoon.

At the top of the Sliver I heard choppers and bombs and knew something had gone wrong nearby. We skied the Sliver and the Tomahawk to exit Garnet Canyon.

At Dornan's we learned a local guide had died in an avalanche on the SE Face of the South Teton. It took him off a 1500 foot cliff. I hear it was about a two foot crown. My guess would be it was a soft windslab of new snow that slid on the suncrust from a few warm days last week.

Condolences to the friends and family of Wray Landon. Rest in peace.

Saw your tracks, we did a crack of noon run on shadow. Anyone from your group lose a gps unit?

Hey Powderjunky...

If it's a yellow one, it belongs to the Big Horn Sheep project... they have a drop box near the map at the Bradley Taggart Parking Lot... they're following skier routes to study impacts on the Teton Sheep population.
