Backcountry Skiing Journal From:

Warpigsinfin: February 16, 2010 Uphill: 4,500 ft. | Downhill: 4,500 ft.

Today we skinned Garnet Canyon through the Meadows to the base of the winter bootpack (currently non-existent) that heads up the N Fork towards the Lower Saddle. Weather was dreary, windless and warm when we started (11 am) but as we hit the Meadows (2 pm) the fog started to burn off and soon the sun was out, the wind came, and high peaks showed their sexy selves up close.

Below 9000 feet, Snow is SHIT CRUST on all aspects except the extremely shady. Even in what seems to be totally shaded you'll encounter patches of crust as well. Above 9000 feet we encountered an inch or two of fresh with a little wind buff but hardly crusty... pretty decent snow. Even the S facing sun-blasted aspects skied decently... but not good.

No avy signs and we encountered some confidence boosting tracks up and down a little N facing couloir just East of the Meadows... amazing those guys didn't get slid. W Hourglass looks ready to pop but beckons. No tracks above our own.

Best to hit the N facin Skied up Garnet Canyon to just above the Meadows, where the N Fork gets steep and the wintertime booter generally goes in.

Good snow on the purely shaded with SHIT CRUST elsewhere below 9000 feet. Above 9000 feet there's an interesting combo on wind-affected and creamy goodness on most aspects.

No avy activity. No human activity above the Meadows either.

Dreary morning turned into a bluebird afternoon. Worth checking out.
