I kicked off a big slide on the NE Ridge of Teewinot.

We headed to GTNP for an overnight up Cascade Canyon. Our intent? Explore the mid-winter ski potential of the NE Ridge and N Face of the lower flanks of Teewinot.

The ski terrain is surreal... think Granite Canyon with a huge pillow field at the base. Unfortunately, no obvious safe ascent revealed itself to us.

After setting up camp we started ascending the safest-looking aspects through low-angle pillow lines on the NE Ridge. After a few hours of occasionally exposed track-setting we found ourselves at a foreboding headwall and found a spot to gear up.

About 500 feet into the descent I came to a bench with a sketchy-looking rollover so I turned hard left to traverse to a treed ridgelet that looked safer. As I turned a 3 foot hard slab released at the rollover. My buddies had eyes on it from above.

We skied the debris ~800 vert. It never stepped down to ground but would have been a killer had I been caught.
