In search of non-acl tearing snow to ski we headed as high in elevation as avey conditions would permit. We found escape from the cascade concrete on a west facing slope above 7000 ft. The snow was velvety & after some snowpack evaluation we stayed off anything steeper than 30. The snowpack showed us a heavy 2 ft wind compacted slab was resting on an ice layer that was not greatly bonded due to the dry snow from earlier in the week. It would take a lot to move it but if it went it would go big.Keep the Stoke Going!

Beautiful photo, nicely shot. Is this the back of Moon Mountain? Ball Butte? Not Tumalo is it, looks too close to Broken Top, but maybe just a big lens.Did you leave a snowmobile parked along the trail/highway and come back to find 2 more parked next to it?
I rode NW of Todd Lake that same day. We had pretty good snow on a steep north facing slope, mostly in the trees.
We saw some of the same snow layers you're talking about, we rode low aspect, or steep but in trees. No problems. Thought i heard a whump once or twice on the way up, but couldn't swear to it.

Good Guess!! Its off of Ball, Yeah those layers are really messing up the snowpack, but hopefully the current rain will restabilize everything in a couple days. How was the snow at Todd?Sign Up for free or login to post comments.
