ALBRIGHT PEAK / WIMPY'S KNOB (1) Elevation: 10,552 ft
Albright Peak is one of the Famous three, the other two being Mavericks and Twenty Five Short. Albright has steep skiing on continuous flanks that rise steeply from the valley floor. It requires a several mile flat skin in from the Death Canyon Road Closure. But once you are there, it is well worth it. Out of the famous three, Albright has probably the most exposure to avalanche terrain, especially the final ramp to the summit. Most people will top out on Wimpy's Knob, which is several hundred feet below the summit and is a safe alternative when the avalanche danger is too high.The views are amazing from either topping out point.
BUCK (0) Elevation: 11,938 ft
Buck Mountain is where a lot of Jackson Hole skiers cash in their v-card into Teton Ski Mountaineering. The East Face is the most sought after line on the mountain. It is aesthetic and gets steep, (around 45 degrees) near the top). Their is exposure as the upper face has 700 foot cliffs below. Barry Corbet skied it with his boots unbuckled.You access Buck via the Death Canyon Trailhead which is closed for the winter adding a couple extra miles to the normally six mile trek.
The North Face of Buck offers some of the most Gnarly Teton lines in the range like the Newcomb Couloir and Bubble Fun couloir.
DISAPPOINTMENT PEAK (1) Elevation: 11,618 ft
Disappointment Peak sits in the center of the highest mountains in the Teton Range, offering breathtaking summit views, difficult climbing, and fun ski descents.GRAND TETON (2) Elevation: 13 ft
The Matriarch of Wyoming's Teton Range and one of the most stunning peaks in North America. It's no wonder the French trappers who named it called it Le Grand Teton, literally "The Great Breast".2nd highest peak in Wyoming at 13,770'. Valley floor is ~6,700' so the Grand towers a stunning 7000' above the flats of Jackson Hole.
Hundreds or thousands of people attempt "The Grand" in the summer but it's rarely visited in winter. The Grand is one of the most coveted ski mountaineering objectives in North America.
MAVERICKS (0) Elevation: 9,500 ft
Mavericks is the middle of the Teton Park Backcountry skiing three. With Albright to the south and Twenty Five Short to the North, Mavericks usually gets skied the least, since it is in the middle of the Death Canyon Closure Trailhead and the Bradley/Taggart Trailhead. However Mavericks offers some of the best continuous fall line skiing out of the three and is worth the visit.MIDDLE TETON (2) Elevation: 12,804 ft
The Middle Teton maybe one of the most skied high peaks in the Teton range. With snow on its east and north sides lasting well into summer, moguls have been spotted on in late July! Some classics include the already mentioned Cave Couloir, The Middle Glacier Route, and the Ellingwood Couloir. This mountain has had more ski descents from its summit than any other Teton peak.MOUNT HUNT (0) Elevation: 10,733 ft
Skiing on Mount Hunt looks great but during November through April(Check with the Park Service for more accurate closure times) Mount Hunt is completely in a wildlife closure. Mostly because the small Teton Herd of Big Horn sheep live up there. Considering there are only like 10 left, give em a break, eh?The South east face has lots of fun steep lines and chutes that look amazing and would be great late spring skiing.
Access can be via the Granite Canyon parking area.
MOUNT OWEN (1) Elevation: 12,928 ft
Mount Owen is one bad ass ski objective. It is remote steep and scary. Stephen Koch had his epic avalanche survival story on the flanks of Mount Owen. The Koven Couloir is one of the main ski lines and get super steep at the top, probably in the high 50 degrees.Most people will be happy to ski near or around it. Due to the long approach, exposed slopes and steep angles, definitely be sure to bring your A game if you try a ski descent.
NEZ PERCE (3) Elevation: 11,850 ft
Looks like a howling wolf when viewed from the North. This mountain holds several classic Teton ski descents, including the East and West Hourglass Couloirs and the Sliver.PROSPECTORS PEAK (1) Elevation: 11,200 ft
Prospectors Peak is another ski objective that has wildlife closures due to bighorn sheep. Check with the Park for more up to date closures, but generally the east face is okay, but the summit is not, or something like that.The two most popular backcountry skiing descents on Prospectors Peak are the Banana Couloir that runs down the east face, and the Apocolypse Couloir which hides on the north side and is accessed via death canyon.
The approaches are long so make sure to get an early start from the Death Canyon Trailhead.
SHADOW PEAK (5) Elevation: 9,980 ft
Shadow Peak is not visible from the road as it blends in perfectly with Nez Perce unless you are looking at it from the north or south. It is basucally the hill side leadin up to Nez Perce, but only till you get near the top do you see the beautiful summit pinnacle. Shadow Peak offers some great backcountry skiing lines, but is also a good way to access the Sliver on Nez Perce.The Lower North Side is very cliffy but you can find some amazing pillow lines and couloirs if you are careful. The upper north side has some fantastic tree skiing but it is fairly steep. The west side has one couloir that takes you to the base of the Sliver Couloir on Nez Perce. There are many interesting chutes on the south side, not all go through so be careful.
Shadow Peak offers skiers a good alternative to Twenty Five short and is accessed by the same parking lot. However tight trees and the potential to get cliffed out make it worthwhile only after you know where you are going.
STATIC PEAK (0) Elevation: 11,195 ft
Static Peak is another mountain in the Teton range where Big Horn Sheep like to hang. As such it is closed roughly from November through the end of April (check with the park for official closures). However early season and late season offer great skiing. Static is a great place to get deep into the Tetons and be surrounded by awesomeness.Access Static Peak from the Death Canyon Trailhead.
TEEWINOT (3) Elevation: 12,325 ft
Teewinot is one of the best ski objectives in Tetons. Its East Face offers steep continuous skiing all the way to the valley floor. The Crooked Thumb Couloir is a classic that runs on the east face to the lookers left and a few hundred feet below the summit.The South Side of Teewinot also offers some good skiing but it is a little more involved to get too. Teewinot is usually skied in the spring when they start plowing the park road, otherwise it can be quite a slog.
The east face has one crux, the narrows, that several qualified skiers have died trying to ski, so most people will ski it on rappel or down climb it.
It is truly an amazing peak that is best skied during cycles of low danger usually in the spring.
TWENTY FIVE SHORT (7) Elevation: 9,975 ft
Merely a bump compared to its jagged neighbors, Twenty Five Short, (name comes from being 25 feeet under 10,000) offers some of the best accessible skiing in the park. Because of its gentle eastern slopes it is often a good intro for novice backcountry skiers to skiing in the National Park. Twenty Five short also hands out some more rowdy terrain on its north side, including the popular Turkey Chute.
