Highlights

Fun, steep skiing in a beautiful location.

Ascent

From the Lupine Meadows trailhead, walk up the endless switchbacks to Amphitheater Lake (or in winter, skin from Taggart Lake). From the lake, the Spoon will be easily identified. Bootpacking up the couloir is the best way to get up and gives you a chance to get a feel for the slope angle. The lake ledges are another good, and probably faster way in summer, though it involves some easy but technical climbing. The summit is worth visiting even if you can't ski from it in low snow years and only takes an extra half hour to an hour.

Descent

In winter or early spring, you may be able to ski from very near the summit. The entrance to the couloir is quite obvious and very steep. Further down, the couloir narrows and the angle mellows out to around 35 degrees down to Amphitheater Lake.

Access/Permits

If you don't have a National Parks Pass, entrance to the park is $25 in the summer.

The spoon is such a great line and being surrounded by the cathedral group is just awesome!
