Highway 130 is closed from approximately November 1st through Memorial Day. During this time, the best way to access the high peaks is, unfortunately, by snowmobile. You can skin in the seven or so miles, of course, but be prepared to breathe 2-stroke exhaust the whole way. On high avy danger days, good skiing can be found near the lakes away from the high peaks.
Possibly the most fun time to ski in the Snowies is after the road opens and allows easy access to the many steep couloirs in the Range. The highest road in Wyoming offers a short ten minute walk/skin from the car that takes you to the base of the finest steep couloir skiing in southern Wyoming. There are over a dozen to choose from, 500-1500 ft and one can boot from the bottom or walk around to the top and ski several lines in a day.
Snowpack
The Snowy Range is true to its name. The dangerous continental snowpack in the range has contributed to many avalanche accidents over the years. The Snowy Range is arguably one of the windiest places in the country, and has plenty of krummholz trees to prove it. Enormous cornices guard the top of couloirs most of the season, and a rappel is sometimes needed to enter them from the top. As a result of the windloading and dangerous cornices, the couloirs in the high peaks are best attempted during spring.
Mountains
MEDICINE BOW PEAK (2) Elevation: 12,013 ft
Medicine Bow Peak is the highest peak in the Snowy Range at 12,013 ft. Complex avalanche terrain on this mountain can make skiing tricky during the winter months. The couloirs to the south of the peak near the Diamond face and Disaster Wall are more often skied during the spring months. Official names of the couloirs are uncertain and debated, but included are Airline Couloir, First Street, Second Street, Old Main, and School House Couloirs. Drive up the road in late may, park, walk ten minutes, and pick your line. Stay for a while and ski several in a day!
