Mountains

BALL BUTTE (1) Elevation: 8,091 ft

Access Ball Butte from Dutchman Flats snow park. It is a great little mountain that sits on the wilderness boundary. It offers mellow slopes and steep chutes on nearly all aspects, which makes this a good place for all day sessioning.

BELKNAP CRATER (0) Elevation: 6,876 ft

Another McKenzie Pass gem. This volcano has a great southeast face that is a perfect pitch and really fun. The summit has as the name would imply, a cool crater.

BLACK CRATER (2) Elevation: 7,257 ft

Located on McKenzie Pass, Black Crater offers tight trees, and steep chutes. The better skiing is found at the upper elevations and a taking a snowmobile to the trailhead makes the approach a lot more humane.

BROKEN TOP (2) Elevation: 9,175 ft

Broken Top offers some of great steep lines on faces, bowls, and couloirs. The Southern Shield is a big exposed face. The glacier cirque of the eastern flanks offer couloirs and the western side has some more great steep faces. Skiing on Broken Top requires a five mile snowmobile ride to the wilderness boundary and offers some of the better skiing in central Oregon.

CACHE MOUNTAIN (1) Elevation: 5,560 ft

On the southern end of Suttle Lake, Cache Mountain offers moderate skiing with just over a 1000 ft of skiable Vert. A snowmobile is recommended and can be driven to the top of the mountain for easy lapping, or left at the base for a more pure effort.

CONE MOUNTAIN (0) Elevation: 5,646 ft

Cone mountain is the less intense peak right next to Iron Mountain with plenty to offer early to mid winter. Park at Tombstone Prairie Snow Park parallel the hwy East for a 1/4 mile then head up between the saddle for Iron Mountain and Cone mountain. There is a sweet 400 ft bowl on the North Face that hits upto 60 deg and has two or three shoots and a cornice when the snow is good.

COWHORN MOUNTAIN (0) Elevation: 7,669 ft

This would be a long approach in the winter unless you use a snowmobile but look at it. This is a hidden gem that no one talks about. If you don't use a snowmobile you can use a groomed road to tour in half way before cutting off trail.

HOODOO (0) Elevation: 5,680 ft

A small resort on Hwy 20 west of Sisters,Oregon by about 30 miles. A great lapping mountain that makes you feel like a machine. A 15-20 min skin to the top with about 1000' of vertical. You can possibly have the whole place to yourself on Wednesdays as they close for the day. With good snow conditions hoodoo is great when your not looking for much of an adventure.

IRON MOUNTAIN (1) Elevation: 5,450 ft

Iron Mountain is one of the few mountains in oregon where you can downhill ski right to the snow park. Located a few miles west of the hwy 126 and hwy 20 junction on highway 20, making the access easy from both the Willamette Valley and the Bend/Redmond area. There are numerous meadows that can be linked together making for some good open skiing. Good lapping mountain with numerous other options in the vicinity visible from the summit.

MIDDLE SISTER (3) Elevation: 10,056 ft

Middle Sister offers some of the best skiing of the Three Sisters. The Southeast Ridge is a Oregon classic that offers up more than 3000 feet of continuous skiing. Hayden Glacier offers mellow summer time skiing while the couloirs of the east face are as daunting as they come. Access is a bit of an issue and a snowmobile helps in the winter to access the Pole Creek Trailhead. Middle Sister is best skied during late spring and early summer when camping in the elements isn't too brutal.

MOON MOUNTAIN (0) Elevation: 7,450 ft

Moon mountain is in between Tumalo mountain and Ball Butte. On a bigger scale, it's between Mt Bachelor & Broken Top (slightly west of both). It's just a quick 400 foot pitch, but a little bit steeper than most things around here (which isn't saying much). Usually, it's completely tracked out my snowmobilers, so it was nice to ski it before they venture out.

MOUNT WASHINGTON (2) Elevation: 7,794 ft

Mount Washington is a striking volcano is central Oregon. Its north slopes hold snow well through June. Probably not skiable from the true summit, except by the most elite, the west flank, North Flank, and South Eastern slopes offer the best ski descents. You will need a snowmobile to access Mount Washington in the winter. Even with the sled, Expect a 3-5 mile approach.

NORTH SISTER (2) Elevation: 10,085 ft

Kindly said North Sister is a teetering pile of crap. However it does have some fun skiing on it when conditions permit. At very least, winter is the best time of year to climb it as the snow and ice act as a glue to hold it together. The steep eastern faces offer some potential couloirs to ski when they are not blue ice. Other flanks of the mountain offers some skiing also but the approach can be quite long for the effort.

POTATO HILL (0) Elevation: 5,200 ft

Potato Hill is located a few miles west of Hoodoo Ski Resort. Easy skin from potato hill snow park for Approximately 800ft of skiable Vert. Pick your lines appropriately, there are cliff bands located through out the north side of of the mtn. You can view the terrain from HWY 126/20 approx 2mi west of the entrance to Hoodoo. Due to the elevation mid-late winter will provide best conditions. Be aware of the creek crossing near the hwy if you plan to ski to the hwy on your last lap.

REDTOP MOUNTAIN (0) Elevation: 6,900 ft

This has easy access from Crescent Lake Resort and should have great views of the cascades on a clear day.

SAND MOUNTAIN (3) Elevation: 5,458 ft

A great ski mid to late winter. Sand Mountain is part of an alignment consisting of 23 cinder cones, 42 distinct volcanic vents, and over 3/4 of a cubic mile of lava located in the western half of Santiam Pass near the crest of the Cascade Range in Central Oregon(sand mtn society). Sand is located a few miles west of Hoodoo Ski Resort near Sisters,Or. It offers 360 degrees of excellent views with good skiing. Open shots up top with nicely spaced trees near the bottom. Quick hikes make for an all day beauty!

SOUTH SISTER (3) Elevation: 10,358 ft

The tallest of the three sisters, the South Sister offers over 5000 vertical feet of skiing via the South Ridge route. Access during winter requires a snowmobile until the highway gets plowed. An there are many ski opportunities for all skill levels.

TAM MCARTHUR RIM (8) Elevation: 7,270 ft

One of the best in Oregon. This has it all, steeps, chutes, trees, and great views. The northerly exposure makes it a little more avalanche prone than other Oregon Destinations. A snowmobile is a must for access during winter months while the road is closed.

THREE FINGERED JACK (3) Elevation: 7,841 ft

Three Fingered Jack is an underated Backcountry Skiing destination. It is a heavily eroded volcano with some good skiing that lasts late in to summer. There is one very steep couloir and a lot of short open bowls. Some might argue it is not worth the long approach...

TUMALO MOUNTAIN (2) Elevation: 7,779 ft

Tumalo Mountain is a shield volcano in the Cascade Range of central Oregon, located just northeast of Mount Bachelor across the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. Ice Age glaciers carved a large cirque into the northeast flank of the mountain, producing a bowl which is popular with local backcountry skiers. A United States Forest Service fire lookout tower was built on the summit in the 1930s, but abandoned in the 1970s and subsequently removed. A trail to the summit ascends the southwest flank of the volcano.

WILLAMETTE PASS (0) Elevation: 6,683 ft

Willamette Pass is a resort located 20 miles east of Oakridge,OR. They only operate Thursday through Sunday which makes for good hiking the rest of the week. The proposed west peak always makes for fresh turns, even when chairs are spinning.

Powderjunky,

caunuckonplanks here. I just joined this site, live in Bend, and will be at Tam Rim this coming Fri/Sat and Sun. Is there any way I can talk to you about the area before I go? It'll be my first time there. My email is maurer at earthlink dot net if you wouldn't mind dropping me a line - thanks in advance.
