MOCHO-CHOSHUENCO
MOCHO-CHOSHUENCO
Huge mountains sticking up above lush green valleys. It is a bit like the Pacific Northwest, but more remote and wild. From the summit of any volcano, it is possible to see dozens of other iconic peaks.

Snowpack
In Chile, the labels of Maritime, IC, and Continental don't work. All the mountains are within 100 miles of the Pacific Ocean. It is LATITUDE that makes the difference.

The areas of the Lakes District and Northern Patagonia receive a ton of precipitation, but the moisture content can change dramatically between storms. The stability tends to go through dramatic peaks and valleys depending on timing with the storm. Generally, a day or two after a storm you will find stable, consolidated conditions.

Mountains

MOCHO-CHOSHUENCO (1) Elevation: 7,946 ft

Within the preserve is the volcanic massif of Mocho-Choshuenco. It is actually, one, now-dormant, volcano that while active created two separate peaks. The Mocho (2422m) is a classic cone that rises 400 meters above a large plateau that creates a massive bench on the upper reaches of the mountain. The Choshuenco (2415m) was actually formed when the crater walls of an older formation collapsed. The contrast of the perfect symmetry of Mocho against the jaggedness of the Choshuenco makes the peak stunningly attractive.

PUYEHUE (1) Elevation: 7,336 ft

This mountain has a longer approach, because it lacks a road or ski resort on its flanks. It is famous for its perfect crater, which has fantastic steep skiing on a few aspects.
