Now, despite a frozen fog that has crept over the valley with a saddened drudgery that engulfs everything in an encrusted thin layer of lifeless white ice, we suit up and head out. Like a breaching whale we bust through the clouds on the way to the parking lot. We find ourselves above the mank and depression, amidst blue skies, spring time temps, and more new opportunities.
The thing I love about backcountry skiing is that the same place can ski quite different depending on the conditions. Well in Central Oregon, the conditions are never predictable. It keeps everything fresh and new. This constant change interests me, keeps me honest, honed, and adaptable.
As the country looks to a new leader for hope, new opportunities and possibilities, I am reminded of the conditions of Central Oregon. Just as quickly as it can go from good to bad, it can change from bad to good. There is opportunity around every corner and the situation is what we make of it.
