THE GOODThe SteriPen is light and compact and destroys 99.99% of bacteria, viruses, Giardia. It only takes 90 seconds to purify a Nalgene liter bottle. A solar battery charger is an additional option.
THE BADThe Steripen is very fragile and extra care must be taken to ensure a functional unit.
The batteries are very expensive, $14-$20. Also it is recommended not to store the batteries in the unit so you have take keep taking them out and putting them in. Very annoying especially when it is cold.
It can only purify up to 1 liter at a time. It can only be used in wide mouth Nalgene-like bottles. Does not work with hydration packs.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOWThis has been a reliable purifier for me, but I carry extra batteries and tablets just in case it poops out or breaks. I also wrap it in an extra layer in my pack to protect it from damage.
It is easy to use but hard to remember. It all revolves around one button and a flashing light. Perhaps they could add more buttons, lights, or just print the instructions on the device so it's not hard to remember what all the different blinking lights mean.
This is a cool product with a lot of potential with some must do improvements.
