Another sunny spring day of skiing was upon us, and we had time for one top-to-bottom lap in order to make it back in time for some work. (Yes, we do work, sometimes!) The drive passed quickly, as I gazed out the window at lines I want to ski, endless opportunities provided by the towering peaks so close to our homes.
Backcountry skiing in the Elk Mountains, Colorado.
No cars at the trailhead, warm sun as we geared up. The skin up passed quickly, despite having to reset the track into the more avalanche safe zones. Of course the people behind us followed the less safe track, but hey, if they want to test natural selection, that’s their problem. After a quick evaluation of the snowpack, we decided to stick to our plan and ski a conservative line down the main bowl. The snow was good, nicely based boot deep pow that made for fun fast turns. We skied long pitches and quickly found ourselves back at the car, smiles all around. Talk of future lines filled the car ride home, and now that spring is here a whole new world of possibilities begins to open up before our eyes.
